The long-awaited Veterans ID Card is finally available as an alternative proof of military service. “The new identification is something that veterans have been asking about for many years,” said Wasco County Veterans’ Service Officer Russell Jones.
The Dalles Outpost of Point Man International Ministries is on a mission to help veterans who are struggling with the aftermath of war, and to send comfort and care items to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Toward that end, the group, an “outreach for veterans by veterans” will be in high gear raising funds through two different venues during the next few weeks: A poker run and a Stoner AR-15 raffle.
A new quilt hanging in Doris Smith’s bedroom at The Springs at Mill Creek has some old material in it: handkerchiefs she received during her student nursing days in World War II. In 1943, at age 18, Smith joined the Army Nurse Corps, signing the required pledge to stick with the corps for the duration of the war, plus six months afterward.
1935 — 80 years ago: With the new fall of snow on Mount Hood last week, skiing conditions on the mountain are now better than they have been all winter, according to Crag Rat Fuller, who, with Bob Barker and “Rusty” Fowler, made the trip from the junction to the Hut on Tilly Jane creek by way of the ride trail last Sunday. Several inches of new snow on top of the semi-ice beneath made skiing fast and delightful.
To the editor: This letter is in reply to Larry Bakken’s letter “Never Enough” on Jan 10: Mr. Bakken: I also served in the U.S. Navy (two Korean campaigns). You probably volunteered for military service, as I doubt that you were drafted against your wishes — as some were.
