Playing in the first-ever OSAA Class 1A 6-man football state playoffs, the No. 3-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides (8-1) recorded a 46-12 win over the Elkton High Elks (7-3) in the Nov. 5 quarterfinal.
The defending six-man football state champion (2019) South Wasco County High Redsides continued their recent success last spring as they went undefeated at 5-0. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, there wasn’t any playoffs though and so there wasn’t an official state champion.
Sherman’s Class 1A football win streak over adjacent county rival South Wasco came to an end Saturday in Maupin. The host Redsides (2-0), guided by Coach Mike Waine, used some late-game defensive maneuvers to accomplish their goal, 62-44.
MAUPIN – In one year, the South Wasco County Redsides turned a 3-3 record in independent play, to a 7-2 record and a 2018 playoff berth as a first-year 6-man football program.
MAUPIN – Ahead of Monday’s official start to fall daily doubles, temperatures across the gorge are expected to hover around the mid-80s to low 90s this week.
Sweeping changes are coming for 1A football at the start of the 2018 season that will affect the South Wasco County football programs. The Redsides are playing 6-man football as part of an 18-team pilot program, marking the first time since 1959 that Oregon has participated.
The South Wasco County Redsides have three games left on their schedule and head coach Mike Waine is looking to get his group back on the winning track. The first step toward that direction is at 1 p.m. Friday in Echo for a non-league football matchup versus Huntington.
