Already facing an uphill playoff battle on the road against top-seeded Churchill, The Dalles boys basketball team trailed 28-10 after one quarter and could not recover in its 100-54 state-playoff loss Friday in Eugene.
Just a month ago, The Dalles boys basketball team put up a 2-7 record and looked to be in danger of the letting the season slip away. Jacob Hernandez posted 21 points, Josh Nisbet put in 15 and Dalles Seufalemua added 12 points in a 61-54 Intermountain Conference win over Crook County Friday at Prineville.
Clutch scoring and defensive stands gave The Dalles boys basketball team the surge it needed to snap its six-game losing skid. Josh Nisbet scored a team-leading 20 points and sank the game-winning layup at the buzzer on an assist by Jack Bonham to vault the Riverhawks to a dramatic 52-50 victory over Crescent Valley last Friday at Kurtz Gym.
Down 33-24 with one quarter left to play, The Dalles boys’ basketball team outscored Hermiston by a 17-13 margin and wound up just shy of completing a comeback in a 46-41 loss Tuesday at Hermiston High School.
In big games, the stars rise to the top. For The Dalles Riverhawks, there weren’t one or two contributors that came up clutch against Hermiston, it was Henry Lee, Dakota Murr, Javier Hernandez, Oscar Fernandez, Josh Nisbet and Jack Bonham who gave this group the necessary spark to pick up a 91-85 triumph Friday in Columbia River Conference hoops action at Kurtz Gym.
Jacob Hernandez missed two days of practice due to a sprained wrist. Hernandez hit a pair of clutch fourth-quarter 3-pointers, and he and teammate Josh Nisbet combined for 27 second-half points as The Dalles Riverhawks overcame a 33-29 halftime deficit with a 43-33 run in the final 16 minutes to dispatch of Hood River Valley, 72-66, Tuesday in Columbia River Conference hoops action at Kurtz Gym.
