Clutch scoring and defensive stands gave The Dalles boys basketball team the surge it needed to snap its six-game losing skid.
Josh Nisbet scored a team-leading 20 points and sank the game-winning layup at the buzzer on an assist by Jack Bonham to vault the Riverhawks to a dramatic 52-50 victory over Crescent Valley last Friday at Kurtz Gym.
In the final moments of this the back-and-forth nail biter and the outcome hanging in the balance tied at 50-apiece, Bonham blocked Crescent Valley’s fast break layup attempt, controlled the ball and made the runout pass to Nisbet for the eventual buzzer-beating layup.
“Great defense and great plays were made by so many of guys in clutch situations,” TD head coach Nathan Morris said. “This was just a great team win for us when we needed one.”
Heading into the final period, TD was looking up at a 44-30 deficit and appeared to be well on its way to another crushing setback.
TD showed courage under pressure, however, as six different players scored to help the Riverhawks storm back for a 22-6 fourth-quarter rally.
Dalles Seufalemua knocked down the game-tying shot and forced a key charging call in the last two minutes.
Nisbet also took a charge with the game tied late in action, which gave TD possession and chance to rally.
Jacob Hernandez, who followed up Nisbet with 13 points, dialed up two key assists on the Riverhawks’ last three field goal attempts.
The Dalles (2-6 overall) travels to Linfield College at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27 to take on McMinnville.
On the following day, Dec. 28, the Hawks hit the road again for a non-league showdown at 7 p.m. versus Stevenson, Wash.
