With prayers, readings and song, about 100 people gathered in the Riverside Community Church sanctuary Monday to commemorate the birth of civil rights hero Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday was a federal holiday, with schools, government offices and many businesses closed.

To the editor: I am deeply concerned about the contract our public jail, NORCOR, has with ICE, and the holding of immigrant detainees at our public jail. Over the past year, I have worked to raise awareness around this issue, and have realized that many local people are not aware that NORCOR contracts with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

To the editor: (Edited for length.) Oregon has had measure 11 nearly two decades. In that time, we have seen no significant reduction in the crime rate. As of April 1, 2013, Oregon had 14,327 people behind bars and the yearly cost is $1.5 billion, about $105,000 per year for a single inmate. In contrast, educating a child costs on the order of $10,000. Because of Measure 11, the Department of Corrections sucks significant sums from other critically programs.
