An inaugural event to provide services to the homeless drew about 100 people Jan. 30, far exceeding the organizers’ expectations. Called the “Community Connection,” the event was created by The Dalles Housing Solutions Coalition to not only reach the homeless, but those who can help the homeless.

“Driving while Hispanic.” That’s the crude joke that highlights the fears of the Hispanic community that they are targeted by police for their skin color. Given ramped up immigration efforts under President Donald Trump, that fear has reached a fever pitch. But a series of meetings between local police and Hispanics has sought to address and assuage those concerns.

AARP Tax Aide program sites are now open through the end of tax season. Certified trained volunteers man the sites, sponsored by AARP in cooperation with the IRS. The help is free and preference is given to adults 60 and over and low- and moderate-income taxpayers.
