Hood River skiers Hannah Bergemann and Tucker FitzSimons both won USASA gold at the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association Nationals last week at Copper Mountain, Colo. For Bergemann, defending national titles in women’s 14-up rail jam and women’s 16-18 slopestyle meant that she now claims a total of six national wins in the various USASA freeski disciplines, including halfpipe and skiercross.
Lucy McLean successfully defended her (unofficial) title as “Queen of the Cato Race” Saturday at Timberline Lodge, where the Hood River Valley High School senior blew away the competition to win the varsity girls race for a fourth consecutive year. Also defending his title, senior Austin Keillor posted the fastest time of the day to win the varsity boys race for his second year.
A 2-0 win at home Tuesday night against The Dalles Riverhawks means the Hood River Valley High School varsity girls soccer team closes out its Columbia River Conference schedule undefeated – a first for the team – and heads into the 5A state tournament ranked No. 10 and with the momentum of a six-game winning streak.
Hannah Bergemann brought home three gold medals earlier this month from Copper Mountain, Colo., where she claimed national titles in slopestyle, halfpipe and rail jam events at the 2014 USASA National Championships.

In another strong showing for the Hood River Valley High School ski team, Hannah Bergemann and Brendan Kerr topped the results last weekend in the latest USA Snowboarding Association Mt. Hood Series contest. Although run by USASA, the event included freestyle skiing divisions and drew high school competitors from Hood River, The Dalles, West Linn and Oregon Episcopal School to the slopes of Timberline. The slopestyle event gave each skier two runs down a course of jumps and rails in front of a panel of four judges; the lowest of each skier’s two scores was tossed out.
