To the editor: There is a little weed which causes a big problem in eastern Oregon: genetically engineered Creeping Bentgrass, created by agribusiness giants Scotts Miracle-grow and Monsanto for use as turf grass on golf-courses and to be resistant to the use of Round-up weed killer. The big problem is the grass has escaped and can affect non GMO crops and invade natural areas.
To the editor: On Sept. 9, we were in The Dalles for an event. We visited the I00F Cemetary to place fresh flowers on our daughter, mother, grandmother and grandfather’s graves. Beautiful green manicured grass upon entering, in the veteran's section, but the section we were visiting was parched, weeds growing about a foot high.
A wind-driven grass and brush fire in Lyle swept across the spit of land south of the railroad tracks and Highway 14 Thursday night, burning from the vicinity of Cove Road at the mouth of the Klickitat River east to the 10th Street tunnel. At least one camping trailer was destroyed in the fire, according to witnesses. Multiple agencies responded to the fire, which started in the late afternoon.
