BEND (AP) — The time, effort and money spent fighting wildfires has strained workers and harmed other programs at the Oregon Department of Forestry, according to an Oregon state audit.

A member of the Mid Columbia Rural Fire Protection District runs a hose out as he fights a grass and brush fire on Highway 197 south of The Dalles at milepost three Tuesday, July 14 in the afternoon. Fires were also reported at milepost 4, Eight Mile Road and Boyd Loop Road, at their junction with Highway 197.

1935 — 80 years ago: With the new fall of snow on Mount Hood last week, skiing conditions on the mountain are now better than they have been all winter, according to Crag Rat Fuller, who, with Bob Barker and “Rusty” Fowler, made the trip from the junction to the Hut on Tilly Jane creek by way of the ride trail last Sunday. Several inches of new snow on top of the semi-ice beneath made skiing fast and delightful.
