The city of The Dalles will soon have a new planning director. City Manager Julie Krueger announced Monday that Steven Harris has been hired to replace Dick Gassman, who is retiring. Harris starts Oct. 17.

After hearing an explanation of the basic issues relating to street and storm water improvements and how they affect residential development, The Dalles Planning Commission members decided a field trip is in order.

The Dalles Planning Commission will take up issues related to public improvements — sidewalks, curbs, streets, sewer and water lines — related to residential development at a work session Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. at City Hall council chambers.

The Dalles Planning Commission recommended approval Thursday, Oct. 3, of new land use rules designed to end the practice of charging for public streets and sidewalks — sometimes as much as $150,000 — when residential land is divided into smaller lots, or requiring a commitment to pay in the future.
