Players representing the Sherman High School defending 1A state champion boys’ basketball team were recognized for their accomplishments at the Wasco Memorial Day Celebration. At the two-day event, there was a memorial service at the Depot, a military flyover, go-kart races, games, raffles and book sale, a classic car invitational, a petting zoo and fun jumpers. In its 36th year, the Northwest Cherry Festival will look a little different in 2015 as it moves to First Street. Expanding to three days, the festival will officially begin Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. with a tribute to the community, but events surrounding the festival stretch out over a week.

Because we live in a society that reflects the cultural values of independence, youthfulness, and productivity, often the elderly are either negatively portrayed as frail, decrepit and burdensome “old” folks — ignored, stored away and forgotten. Or on the opposite extreme “super seniors” accomplishing age defying feats of strength and daring.
