To the editor: Where have all the flags gone!!?? I was so disappointed there were no flags waving down Second Street in The Dalles during the Fourth of July weekend. They have always been there in the past during national holidays.

The Fourth of July is America’s annual birthday party that unites people across the nation in celebrations that include parades, barbecues and fireworks. The Dalles Chronicle staff would like to add to the festivities this year with a few fun and/or interesting facts about America’s early history and the the founding fathers who set up the greatest experiment in governance by the people that the world has ever known:

To the editor: Patriot’s Day, Sept. 11, is an official day of Remembrance. As such The American Flag is flown at half-staff from dawn until dusk. The Flag Code and protocol provide the specifications for such display. In the case of flags that are mounted in such a manner that they can not be lowered to half-staff, the code and protocol proscribe that they be flown with a black ribbon [a mourning ribbon] that is the length of the flag and the width of a single stripe, hung from the top of the flag.

PORTLAND — After a veteran posted on Craigslist that his American flag was stolen, U.S. Rep. Greg Walden offered to fly a flag above the Capitol for him. Earlier this week, Jack Miller told KATU he was disgusted after learning someone had stolen his father's American flag from his Southeast Portland home.
