To the editor:
Regardless of anyone's individual views on immigration, the horrendous policy of the current presidential administration, approved by President Trump and being carried out by Chief-of-Staff John Kelly and Attorney General Jeff Sessions under his supervision, to tear children from the arms of their asylum-seeking parents, is cruel and un-American.
It is certainly not pro-life or pro-family. It causes terror and trauma to innocent children. And I think all true Christians know exactly how God feels about this behavior.
This policy is also a violation of both U.S. and international law.
There are values we all share as Americans, whether supporters of the Democratic or Republican parties, or of no party at all. One of those values is that our nation welcomes those who are oppressed by destructive and violent regimes. Another is that we protect the helpless, especially innocent children.
This is not the way America should be. This is not the America I love.
There is a bill in the Senate to end this reprehensible activity. All Democratic senators have already signed on to it, including our Oregon senators.
Please, if you are reading this, urge your friends in states with Republican senators to call them and urge them to support S.3036.
And I urge Rep. Greg Walden to use his influence as a Republican leader to end this horrifying practice. We cannot allow this to continue.
