Maude Virginia Brown, “Ginger,” passed away Oct. 9, 2025, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Oregon. Maude was born Aug. 29, 1936, and was 89 years of age at the time of passing.
Ginger was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Virginia Riddle and Lemuel Freeman. She grew up and attended school in Raleigh and graduated from Needham Broughton High School.
Over the years Ginger lived in Raleigh, St. Louis, Missouri, and Hood River. She married three times, the first in 1954 in St. Louis to Jim Capra Sr.; second in 1959 in St. Louis to Clifford Schmid; and third in 1984 in Raleigh to Arthur Brown. She worked in the hospitality and food and beverage industries throughout her life.
In the 1980s, she developed a love for cats, eventually becoming involved in breeding and showing American Shorthair cats. Over the years, she had numerous award-winning cats, even showing once at a national championship show at Madison Square Garden in New York City in the 1990s. She was an active member for years in the “Triangle Cat Fanciers” in Raleigh, and TICA, The International Cat Association.
She was a colon cancer survivor since May 2009. After surviving cancer, she became a huge fan of Brandi Carlile, even meeting her in person at two different concerts in the Raleigh area. She moved to Hood River in August 2022 to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Robin Capra. She lived at Hawks Ridge Assisted Living from August 2022 through April 2024. She later lived at Hood River Care Center from May 2024 until her passing.
Ginger is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Robin Capra of Underwood, Washington; cousins Beverly Shavlik, Sammy Ennis, Peggy Hobson, and Beth Williams; additional extended family, Debra Martin and Wendy Badgett, all of the Raleigh area; half sisters Linda Meyer of Jacksonville, Florida, and Julie Gatewood of Bradenton, Florida; and friends. Ginger had numerous friends at Hawks Ridge and the Care Center, but her oldest and dearest friends are in North Carolina. Her most special friends are Pam and Gerry Cohen of Raleigh, who deserve special recognition. Over the years, she had too many beloved cats to mention. She was preceded in death by Jim Capra Sr. (died August 2022), Clifford Schmid, Arthur Brown (died May 2004), and both parents.
