John Addington Langfeldt passed away on Oct. 16, 2023, at the age of 87, in The Dalles, Ore. John was Rector Emeritus of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he had served since 1988. John was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 22, 1936, and graduated high school in St. Helens, Ore., in 1954. He studied Astro Physics at University of Washington, and it was during a summer volunteer project, working together rebuilding a church on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota, that he met his first wife, Grace E. Langfeldt, and mother of his children. During those college years, John was a model-maker for Boeing and after graduation, he and Grace headed off to Berkeley, Calif., where received a master’s degree in theology from Church Divinity School of the Pacific and was ordained deacon and priest and served as curate at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle in 1964.
John served congregations in Utah, Nevada, Saudi Arabia, and Oregon, and it was in Saudi that he and his second wife, Harriet, started their married life, met many cherished friends, and enjoyed lots of memorable adventures. John and Harriet continued to travel the world together for many years.
John had numerous passions including biblical archeology (including several archeological digs in the Middle East), all forms of art, and peace and justice in the Middle East and the world at large. He continued to be an inexhaustible bibliophile and scholar on a variety of topics, including astrophysics, antiquities, art, science and history. During retirement, John was active in several local organizations including The Discovery Center, Maryhill Art Museum, The Dalles Art Center, and Kiwanis’ Organization, as well various philanthropic organizations.
John is survived by his and Harriet’s children, AnnScott Ettinger (Bill), Debbie McMeel (Ed), Cliff Hume, Elizabeth Walter (Doug), Sarah Langfeldt Baker (Dan), and Sabrina Ferris, as well as his previous wife Grace Langfeldt, 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
There will be memorial service for John at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome! A private interment will be prior to the celebration of life. In leu of flowers, donations can be made to The Discovery Center, Maryhill Art Museum, or Sabeel.
