HOOD RIVER — A full agenda awaited the Hood River County School District board of directors at its Jan. 10 meeting, held at Wy’east Middle School, including updates on the superintendent search, a Community and Family Partnerships core value report, and the appointment of three new budget committee members.
Human Resources Director Gus Hedberg also recognized the HRCSD Migrant Education parent advisory council, a component of each migrant program in Oregon. Among its responsibilities are developing plans for implementing programs, reviewing and recommending project proposals and co-planning and co-leading events and initiatives that promote family involvement. Business meetings are monthly and are open to the public.
“What I’ve seen, we have an especially active and participatory group,” Hedberg said. “We can be very proud of this group and their leadership in our community.”
Superintendent search
Milt Dennison, Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) consultant, presented the proposed HRCSD superintendent screening committee application, seeking board input on wording. This committee will screen superintendent applications and give input; final interviews will be conducted by board members.
Applications for the screening committee are due by 4 p.m. on Jan. 18; successful applicants will be appointed by the board at the Jan. 23 meeting at Hood River Middle School.
Core value report
Family Partnerships Director Patricia Ortega Cooper and Communications Director Stephanie Hoppe gave an update on the district’s strategic plan goal of strengthening community and family partnerships. While there are five goals complete with action steps, they focused on two specific items: Holding digital literacy workshops and collaborating on next fall’s open houses.
Digital literacy workshops will be held monthly, January through April, at Mid Valley Elementary, Hoppe said. “We heard from our families and from our staff the need for some of our families to increase their technology skills, especially nowadays, we use Google Forms, Google Meets, our enrollment and registration is online — we live in a connected world now, so we’re trying to meet this objective by offering these workshops this year.”
More than 50 parents have signed up to participate, she said. Each workshop will contain a specific lesson, starting with the basics: How to turn on a computer.
“Our hope is that these families will become mentors in upcoming years,” Ortega Cooper said.
As for next school year’s open houses, Ortega Cooper said the plan is to coordinate the events so, should a family have children in multiple schools, they can still participate at each one. “Schools are bringing families into the building — we’re proposing to do it systematically … this year, we had two open houses the same day.”
Budget committee members appointed
Three new budget committee members were appointed during the Jan. 10 meeting: Terra Metta in Zone 2 (central lower valley), Peter Harman, Zone 3 (May Street Elementary area) and Jamie Smith, Zone 4 (Odell). Each appointment was approved unanimously by the board.
The budget committee consists of equal numbers of board and community members, with community members appointed to serve three-year, staggered terms.
