Anna Cavaleri, of Hood River, purchased just one ticket for the 2016 Columbia Gorge CASA playhouse raffle — but one was all it took.
And the phone call on July 7 came at just the right time.
The Cavaleri-Douglass family won the 2016 CASA playhouse raffle with a single ticket, and young Sadie Douglass could not be happier. The playhouse is a two storied, carpeted affair with solar lighting and a star-viewing, clear upper roof.
Trisha WalkerAnna Cavaleri, of Hood River, purchased just one ticket for the 2016 Columbia Gorge CASA playhouse raffle — but one was all it took.
And the phone call on July 7 came at just the right time.
“The night before the drawing, my husband (Doug Douglass) and I were heading out for a ride in Post Canyon,” said Cavaleri. “I had the ticket on our refrigerator and remembered checking the CASA website at 5 p.m. to see if the drawing had happened yet. We went out for our ride — it was a little rainy — and I ended up going over my handlebars and separating my shoulder.
“We headed home to pick up (daughter) Sadie from the sitter and went to a friend’s house for pre-emergency room evaluation. I was relieved when our wonderful friend advised that nothing seemed broken, to go home and take a hot bath and some Advil and see how I felt in the morning. As Doug, Sadie and I were leaving our friend’s house, we got the call that we had won. We were very excited — couldn’t believe it, and the news could not have come at a better time!”
Susan Baldwin, Columbia Gorge CASA volunteer manager, said that this year’s raffle raised close to $10,000 for the program, which relies on volunteers, grants and donations to remain in service; while the program is nationally-mandated, it receives no government funding.
As for the Cavaleri-Douglass household, “I like to tell Sadie it’s my playhouse,” said Cavaleri, “and she reminds me that it’s ‘our’ playhouse. She’s over the moon!”
