THE DALLES — Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Happy Valley, Ore., a little before 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 23 involving a male from The Dalles. Giovanny “Gio” Alberto Avila, 21, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver, 21-year-old Gavin Elliott Wallis of Boring, Ore., has been arrested and booked into the Clackamas County Jail on the charges of manslaughter in the second degree and DUII. He is being held without bail.
According to a department press release, deputies were dispatched to an unknown injury crash based on a “crash detection” alert from an Apple iPhone, a technology that automatically calls 911 when a traffic crash is detected.
“Within five minutes, deputies found the scene in dense vegetation near SE Bob Schumacher Road and SE Stevens Court in Happy Valley,” said the press release. “The vehicle was not visible from the road. Deputies located a heavily damaged 2003 Subaru WRX, which was laying on its roof. Two occupants were inside.”
Crews from Clackamas Fire removed Avila and Wallis from the vehicle and provided medical attention. Wallis was transported to an area hospital and arrested later that day.
According to the press release, The Sheriff’s Office inter-agency Criminal Reconstruction and Forensic Technicians (CRAFT) team is investing the incident. The case is being referred to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
