The second season of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder might solve the mystery of what happened to Jamie Reynolds (Eden H. Davies), Connor’s (Jude Morgan-Collie) brother, but the complicated mystery ends on a devastating note in so many ways that both the viewer and Pip (Emma Myers) are left reeling from the emotional fallout.
Between lingering trauma, a miscarriage of justice, and the haunting realization that some truths come at a terrible cost, the finale leaves Pip questioning whether solving the mystery was ever really worth it in the first place. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Season 2 of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Here is a breakdown of everything you need to know about that brutal ending.
Who took Jamie and why?
Jamie is catfished by a mysterious “girl” named “Layla,” who is catfishing several men in the area, all around the age of 28. As it turns out, Jamie lies about his age, claiming to be 28, and when he is found out, Layla is no longer interested in him as a potential boyfriend, but keeps using him to run her errands, including finding a specific 28-year-old.
As it turns out, Layla is on the hunt for a notorious man once known as “Child Brunswick,” who, as a child, was forced by his serial killer father, Scott Brunswick, to lure unsuspecting children from playgrounds into his father’s deadly grasp. Since the murders and his father’s eventual arrest many years ago, “Child Brunswick” has been forced to move from town to town under new identities to evade the constant threats against his life, changing his name repeatedly in an attempt to disappear forever.
Jamie accidentally gets too close to “Child Brunswick,” and the 28-year-old panics, taking Jamie hostage. He doesn’t mean to hurt him; he is just scared.
Who is “Child Brunswick”?
“Child Brunswick” is Stanley (Misia Butler), the security guard for the golf club. He keeps Jamie in a water closet. Over the week he is gone, the two actually become friends as Stanley tells him his life story and explains his situation. He knows someone is looking for him and that his life is in danger. By the end of the series, Jamie is more interested in helping Stanley than escaping.
Who is “Layla”?
Layla is really Charlie Green (Jack Rowan), the seemingly friendly new neighbor. As a child, Charlie witnessed Scott Brunswick’s son help lure victims for his serial killer father, including Charlie’s twin sister, who became one of the victims. Charlie spends years obsessed with finding the child accomplice, who has been given a new identity and hidden from the public.
Charlie believes the former “Child Brunswick” is living in Little Kilton under a new name. Using the “Layla” profile, he manipulates Jamie into helping him track the person down. Jamie initially thinks he is helping a woman online, but after realizing the truth, he confronts the wrong suspect: Stanley.
That is when Stanley takes him hostage, and they kinda-sorta become friends.
Pip meets with Stanley, who explains the entire misunderstanding to her and that Jamie is alive, but they are followed by Charlie. Charlie ultimately shoots Stanley in front of Pip after deciding the justice system will never properly punish him. Stanley dies in Pip’s arms after she tries her best to save him.

What about Max Hastings?
Throughout the season, Max (Henry Ashton) is on trial for multiple sexual assaults and rapes, with Pip determined to help bring him down. Becca Bell (Carla Woodcock), who is incarcerated for her sister’s murder, finally agrees to testify against him after initially refusing because she believes powerful men like Max always escape consequences. Other girls, including Nat (Jessica Webber), Jamie’s best friend and crush, come forward with stories about being drugged and assaulted. Pip even has a recorded confession from Max where he threatens her and her friends. But it is Jamie’s testimony about witnessing Max leaving a room after assaulting Nat that is crucial to the case.
As the investigation into Jamie’s disappearance unfolds, Max becomes increasingly desperate. He threatens witnesses, manipulates people around him, and even pressures his cousin Robin (Freddie England) into spying on Pip. He also blackmails Stanley into creating a fake CCTV alibi that makes it appear Max is at the golf club the night Jamie vanishes. Later, it is revealed Max gets Ravi (Zain Iqbal) fired from his internship as retaliation against Pip.
Despite all of this, the court ultimately finds Max not guilty. Without Jamie’s testimony, there just is not enough evidence. The verdict devastates Pip, Nat, Becca, and the other victims. Pip completely loses control emotionally afterward, lashing out at Robin and suffering a breakdown as she struggles with the idea that evil people like Max can escape justice.
However, one of the season’s biggest turning points comes when Max’s own mother (Annabel Mullion) realizes he is guilty. After discovering hidden pills tied to the assaults, she confronts him directly and tells him he has become her “worst nightmare.”
Even after the acquittal, Max remains openly cruel and threatening. He taunts people, intimidates his mother, and acts untouchable because the legal system fails to convict him. In response, Pip releases the audio recording of Max’s confession publicly, exposing him socially, even if he cannot be punished legally. By the finale, Max is still free, but his reputation is destroyed. For now.

How does it all end?
The season ends on a dark note. While Jamie is rescued and the Child Brunswick mystery is solved, Max escapes punishment, and Pip appears to be severely traumatized and questioning whether justice actually exists at all. It will take next season to resolve these loose ends.
