Seniors Kai Wagner and Logan King finished second and fifth overall to lead the Hood River Valley boys cross country team to a third-place team finish at the annual Ultimook Race on Sept. 7 near Tillamook.
The Eagles competed in the 5A-6A race at the meet, a favorite early-season stop during the cross country season because of its famous mud pit and stream crossings within the 5,000-meter course.
Wagner finished in 16 minutes, 16 seconds — four seconds behind Camas junior Cohen Butler. King was at 16:31, as Hood River scored 109 team points and finished in back of Corvallis (91) and Portland’s Cleveland (98) among 21 scoring schools.
Also helping the Eagles earn another slab of log (Ultimook’s unique trophies) were junior Victor Coffman (22nd), senior Davis Kerr (34th), and frosh Copeland Louis (46th). Juniors Brayden Strong (52nd) and Collin Gerald (59th) completed HRV’s top seven varsity finishers at the meet.
Perrin seventh in first meet of season
Hood River Valley junior Syl Perrin finished seventh Sept. 7 at the annual Ultimook Race cross country meet at Hydrangea Ranch near Tillamook.
Perrin ran the 5A-6A 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 14 seconds, leading Hood River to eighth place among 12 scoring schools. The Eagles scored 189 team points. Crescent Valley, led by individual winner, Emily Wisniewski, won with 31 points.
Also among the top five (team points scorers) for Hood River were: junior Noelle Stasak, 39th; junior Charlotte Fuller, 48th; freshman Freya Nelson, 60th; and senior Olivia Millikin-Spray, 72nd.
It was the first race this season for Hood River Valley, which was scheduled to compete Sept. 4 at a Northwest Oregon Conference preview meet. The meet was canceled because of extreme heat that day. The Eagles are slated to run Sept. 14 at the Oregon City XC Invitational.
