THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks competed in the Seaside Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament Dec. 19-21 at Seaside High School and they won two-of-three nonleague games.
The Class 4A Riverhawks (7-1) lost 46-42 to the Baker High Bulldogs, a 2024 4A state playoff squad, in their first game Dec. 19. Senior post Sydney Newby (16 points) led the Riverhawks in scoring. It marked the first loss of the season for the Riverhawks, who won their first five games.
The Riverhawks bounced back and recorded a season-high point total in a 61-21 victory Dec. 20 over the Elma High Eagles (1-5), of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Class 1A division in Washington. Newby (21 points) and senior Laci Hoylman (10 points) led seven players in the scoring column for The Dalles.
“We made a lot of little mistakes that helped them [Baker] pull out the win. It was kind of a good wakeup call for all of us and it was a reality checkup, as well,” said coach Darcy Hodges.
The Riverhawks followed with a 58-52 win on Dec. 21 over the Woodland High Beavers (6-2), of the WIAA Class 2A division. Newby (23 points) and Johnston (14 points) scored in double figures to help lead the Riverhawks to the win.
“It was fun at Seaside and it’s just nice to get away from the gym and spend time hanging out and bonding with the girls in a fun type of environment outside of basketball,” said Hodges.
Boys win one
The Dalles boys team (4-4) also competed in the Seaside tournament and they won one-of-three games. The Class 4A Riverhawks lost their first game 46-27 to the No. 3 ranked Class 5A Crescent Valley High Raiders (5-0). They bounced back and won their next game 59-50 over the Woodland High Beavers (1-8) of the WIAA Class 2A level. The Riverhawks concluded the tourney with an 84-71 loss to the Class 3A Cascade Christian High Challengers (2-2).
Junior Derek Goulart was selected for an all-tourney award as he averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the three games. Sophomore guard Oliver Stevens was the Riverhawks’ leading scorer as he averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in the tourney.
