THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks (5-0) continued their early season success in non-league girls basketball as they won their fifth straight game, 41-35, over Heppner on Dec. 14 in the Columbia River Clash Tournament at Umatilla.
Despite having their lowest-scoring game of the season, the Class 4A Riverhawks were able to pull out the road win over the Class 2A Mustangs. The Riverhawks are one of five unbeaten squads in the 31-team 4A classification.
The victory followed a 52-33 home win Dec. 13 over the defending Class 3A champion Corbett High Cardinals (2-2). In that contest, the Riverhawks overcame a slow start after falling behind 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Riverhawks played solid defense in holding the Cardinals to single digit scoring in the final three quarters, while outscoring them 42-20 to record their largest margin of victory this year.
“It’s kind of nice having the high recognition in the OSAA rankings [No. 3 as of Dec. 15],” said Coach Darcey Hodges. “The playoffs are still a long ways away. The girls are working hard, they’re putting in the time at practice, and starting to jell and come together as a team.”
The Dalles senior post Sydney Newby scored a team-high 24 points to help lead the Riverhawks to the win.
“We’re focusing a lot more on defense and it’s definitely improving in every game. The girls are utilizing that type of strategy well and it’s good to see them executing well defensively during the games," Hodges said.
In their Dec. 10 home opener at Kurtz Gym, the Riverhawks won 55-38 over the North Marion High Huskies (2-2), which marked their highest-scoring game of the season. Newby (17 points) led a trio of players in double figure scoring, which included Hailey Johnston (11 points) and Jackie Begay (10 points).
“We’re hoping to be a contender for the league title this year and we’re focusing on achieving our goal of making the playoffs this year," Hodges said.
The Dalles last qualified for the girls basketball state playoffs in 2015.
