MAUPIN — The South Wasco County High Redsides continued to be perfect in Big Sky League volleyball, as they extended their win streak to 10 following two more league victories last week.
The Redsides (10-0 league, 18-7 overall) won an Oct. 8 home match, 3-2, over the Dufur High Rangers (7-3 league, 12-9 overall). The Redsides had a strong serving performance by juniors Justee Gotham, Tayler Brittain, Jayda Iverson (six aces) and sophomore Taya Howell, who were each 100 percent at the service line.
The Redsides overcame a 2-0 set deficit by winning three straight, including close wins of 26-24 and 25-20, followed by a dominating 15-4 fifth set tiebreaker victory. Junior Bailey Udey (24 kills, 29 digs), senior Macy Bell (14 kills, two blocks, 19 digs), sophomore Hailee Pechanec (seven kills, five blocks) and Iverson (five kills, 20 digs, 21 assists) helped lead the Redsides. Gotham had 26 assists and Brittain had 16 digs. In a key Oct. 10 matchup, the Big Sky West Division leading Redsides recorded a 3-0 win over the Big Sky East leading Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (9-2 league, 17-5 overall) at Arlington High School. The Redsides had solid serving by Iverson, Gotham and Udey (five aces), who each served 100 percent. Udey (16 kills, 17 digs), Pechanec (five kills, six blocks, 14 digs), Iverson (three kills, 16 assists) and Macy Bell (three kills, 12 digs) had strong overall performances.
The last time the two squads met, the Cardinals won 3-0 on Oct. 21, 2023, in the Big Sky League District championship game. This year’s district championship is Oct. 26 at The Dalles High School.
Dufur bounced back from its loss to South Wasco and solidified their second-place position in the Big Sky West with a 3-0 win over Horizon Christian on Oct. 10 in Hood River. The Rangers can clinch second place in the West with a win Oct. 17 at Glenwood.
Sherman split two matches last week to solidify its third-place spot in the Big Sky East behind Wheeler County and Ione/Arlington. The Huskies won at home Oct. 8, 3-0, over Bickleton. The Huskies followed with an Oct. 10, 3-2, loss to Wheeler.
Klickwood improved to 4-6 in league and 5-11 overall following a 3-0 win over Lyle on Oct. 10 at Klickitat High School. Klickwood is in third place in the Big Sky West Division standings.
