THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls swim teams competed in two meets — Jan. 18 in the Madras White Buffalo Classic and Jan. 25 in La Grande.
At Madras, the Riverhawks recorded a combined boys/girls total of 11 top five finishes and one event win. Led by sophomore dual-sport winter student athlete Kaiya Doty (four top-fives), the eight-member girls squad took fifth place in team scoring with 161 points in the 10-team meet. The Redmond High Panthers won with 287 points.
Doty notched two top-five individual finishes, and also combined with teammates Laura Black, Lillen Vaught and Rowena Benjamin to help the Riverhawks swim to two top-five relay finishes. The quartet took third in the 200 medley relay (2:20.23) and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (2:02.04).
Doty took fifth place in the 100 butterfly (1:21.33) and fourth in the 200 free (2:23.00). Vaught, a sophomore, took fourth in the 100 free (1:04.95).
Doty competes in two winter sports simultaneously as she’s also a member of the Riverhawk girls ski team. Doty competed in the second event of the Mt. Hood Ski Race League on Jan. 20 at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl and was 27 out of 58 skiers.
The eight-member Riverhawk boys squad took sixth place out of nine teams with 175 points at Madras. The boys team’s performance was highlighted by sophomore Rhett Loughmiller, who won the 500 free (5:51.48) (among his four top-five finishes). Loughmiller was second in the 200 free (2:07.39), two seconds behind winner Max Hendricks (2:05.35) of Klamath Union. Klamath Union took first place in team scoring with 254 points.
Loughmiller combined with teammates Maverick Varland, Aiden Nunez and sophomore Sawyer Dray as they swam to fifth place in the 200 free relay (1:46.95) and second in the 200 medley relay (2:04.54). The Riverhawks quartet finished four seconds behind Class 5A Ridgeview High (2:00.49), who won the medley relay. Dray swam to fourth in the 100 free (58.89), to give him a total of three top-five finishes. Varland, a sophomore, also had three top-fives, as he also swam to fifth place in the 200 IM (2:37.62).
On Jan. 25 at La Grande, the boys posted 10 top-five finishes, including four event wins and they took third in team scoring with 65 points out of five teams. The Pendleton High Buckaroos won the meet with 73 points.
Loughmiller (100 back, 200 free) and Varland (500 free) recorded individual wins. The quartet of Loughmiller, Varland, Dray and Everest Lenardson took first place in the 200 free relay (1:42.18).
The Riverhawk girls squad swam to six top-fives at La Grande and they took third place in team scoring with 29 points. La Grande won the meet with 113 points.
