The turnaround season continues for the undefeated Hood River Valley girls soccer team, as the No. 4-ranked Eagles captured their third straight nonleague win, 4-0, over Class 6A Liberty High in Hillsboro on Sept. 11.
The 3-0 Eagles, guided by third-year Coach Leonor Lopez-Agiurre and assistant Coach Gio Magana, have already exceeded their win total from last year when they were 2-10-2.
“It was a good win for us and so far, so good,” said Magana, who guided the Eagles to the win in his temporary role as head coach since Lopez-Agiurre was unable to attend the game. “The team has made a great turnaround from a year ago. We have lots of girls who are eager to compete well this year, so that’s just great. We have a good mixture of experienced seniors (Grace Rowan, Ocean Rivera, Lucy Dierker, Julia Rowan) and a lot of young players too.
“This win streak is definitely helping build the girls’ confidence level, which is awesome, and our goal is to make it to the playoffs.”
The Eagles controlled the ball offensively for the majority of the Liberty game while pressuring the Falcons often on their defensive side of the field. The Eagles outshot the Falcons, 12-0, and HRV goalkeepers Grace Rowan and junior Valeria Miramontes didn’t have to make any saves.
HRV went up 1-0 early in the contest when junior midfielder Magnolia Clermont scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick following a Falcon foul inside the 6-yard box. Sophomore forward Keira Brennan scored off an assist by junior midfielder Yareli Hernandez for a 2-0 HRV halftime lead.
HRV freshman forward Josie Faaborg scored two second-half goals off assists from Brennan and Dierker. Faaborg leads HRV in scoring with seven goals through three matches.
