Hood River Valley’s downhill ski racing teams will compete in the 2024 state championship races this weekend at Mt. Bachelor near Bend.
The Eagles boys won the Mt. Hood League regular season title with a perfect 70 points for the five races. HRV scored 14 first place points in each race this season. The Hood River girls finished third behind Sandy and Grant. The Dalles was fifth in the girls standings and sixth in the boys.
The state competition is March 7 with the men’s slalom and women’s giant slalom races, and March 8 with men’s giant slalom and women’s slalom.
Hood River’s Lars Welch was the top individual point scorer during the five-race, regular Mt. Hood season and teammate Thorsen Welch was third. HRV’s Ricardo Miller was ninth in season scoring and Eagle Jaden Johnson was 12th. Lars Welch won all three league slalom races and was third in the two giant slalom races. Thorsen Welch won the two giant slalom events.
The Dalles boys were led by Cooper Klindt, who was eighth in individual racing this season. Trout Lake’s Rowan Shuman finished second in the boys individual rankings.
On the girls side, Hood River Valley’s Emily Teets was the top individual point scorer, winning the four (of five) races she entered. Teammate Eliotte Walsh was ninth in individual scoring, with her best finish a second place showing in week two of the season.
The Dalles was led by Kaiya Doty and Kailee Klindt, who finished the regular season ranked 11th and 12th individually.
