HOOD RIVER — A little home cooking was all Hood River Valley’s girls basketball team apparently needed.
The Eagles won their first two home games this season last week after going 0-3 on the road to start the year. Hood River beat Gresham 45-32 on Dec. 12 and Bend 51-47 on Dec. 14 to improve its record to 2-3.
Gresham came to Vannet Court with a 2-0 record after wins over South Eugene and Franklin to start the season, but HRV jumped out to a 15-3 first-quarter lead on the Gophers and was never threatened thereafter. The lead was 20 points early in the fourth quarter, 36-16, when Sarah Mason found Julia Rowan open for one of her three 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Isa Rivera provided a spark off the bend for HRV with seven points in the middle two periods.
The win over Bend wasn’t as definitive, as the Eagles had to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit. Bend was coming off a back-to-back, having played the night before in Pendleton (a loss). The Lava Bears outscored HRV 16-6 starting late in the first quarter through halftime.
Rowan sparked the Eagles offensively after intermission by making four of her six 3-pointers, as HRV outscored Bend 22-6 to take a 41-34 lead. Her fourth 3-pointer of the quarter came at the buzzer off a pass from Mia Garcia.
Guard Bella Howe also added a 3-pointer in the quarter and five total points. Meantime, teammates Emily Doss and Addi Van Metre were controlling the inside, limiting Bend to one shot on most of their possessions.
Bend got its second wind in the fourth quarter, limiting Hood River’s outside attempts and pulled to within 45-44 with two minutes remaining. Rowan scored on a layup after breaking Bend’s full-court pressure and HRV added 5-of-9 free throws in the final 39 seconds to hold off the Lava Bears.
