MAUPIN — Horizon Christian School won six individual track and field events and two relays to pace Gorge area Class 1A schools at the Redside Invitational on a sunny April 5 at South Wasco County in Maupin.
One of the individual event Hawk wins on the boys side came from senior Caleb Caldwell, with a near-personal record in the 1500 meters of 4 minutes, 27.88 seconds. He also ran a leg — along with Brayden Strong, Landon Whitaker and Xander Ives — on Horizon’s first-place 4x400 relay. Whitaker, Charlie Haynie, Judah Garrett and Aaron Johnson teamed up to win the 4x100 relay for Horizon.
Also on the track, freshman Haynie won the boys 110 hurdles in 16.82 seconds. Senior Josiah Roberts added a win in the boys discus at a season best 125 feet, 9 inches.
The Horizon girls had three wins. Junior Noelle Stasak won the 1500; sophomore Karis Caldwell won the 200 (PR 28.61); and senior Hannah Adams won the high jump at 4-10. The high jump turned out to be a friendly competitive, three-way competition with Adams, her senior teammate Bella Sperry (4-8) and South Wasco’s Macy Bell (4-8).
The host Redsides posted two girls wins. South Wasco junior Bailey Udey won the long jump (14-11) and triple jump (32-2.5). Teammate Hailee Pechanec was second in the shot put (28-10) and 300 hurdles (55.08). Justee Gotham won the girls 800.
DUFUR — Dufur High’s track and field team competed at the 14-team Buckaroo Round-Up April 2 …
South Wasco’s boys were led by their throwers and Jason Hull. Jack Miles won the shot put in a PR 38-2.5, One-time distance runner Storm McCoy won the javelin at a near-PR 147-11 and was second in the discus. Miles added a third-place finish in the discus and javelin; and Coy Shirley was second in the javelin. Hull won the 300-meter hurdles and earned a hurdle crossbar for his sports memorabilia after snapping it in half with his lead leg.
Glenwood junior Shane Spino had a busy sprint day, placing fifth in both the 200 and 400, and third in the 100 (12.03). Giana Jackson was second in the long jump at 14-10.75.
Lyle’s Jack Thiemann bounded to a personal best in the triple jump at 39-2.74. Danika Wright was second in the girls discus and third in the shot put for the Cougars.
