An OSAA Class 5A softball season that began with lots of promising and high expectations for Hood River Valley winds down this week. The No. 14-ranked Eagles have lost three Northwest Oregon Conference games in a row and unless they turn things around, their season could end sooner than expected.
The Eagle offense has been virtually nonexistent recently, as HRV has been outscored 25-1 in its past three contests. The Eagles (5-6 NWOC, 13-11 overall) lost 11-0 on the road May 9 against the Centennial High Eagles (6-7 NWOC, 12-9 overall). The Eagles followed with a 7-0 road loss, May 10 to the No. 8-ranked, league leading Wilsonville High Wildcats (10-1 NWOC, 14-8 overall).
The Eagles were hoping to end their slump and get a win May 14 on the road against the Putnam High Kingsmen (8-3 NWOC, 11-10 overall). The Eagles play May 15 in their final home game at 5 p.m. versus the Canby High Cougars (7-5 NWOC, 11-11 overall) on senior night at Westside Elementary School in Hood River. The Eagles conclude the regular season with a 5 p.m. road game Friday against the Hillsboro High Spartans (1-10 NWOC, 2-20 overall). The top 16 5A teams advance to the state playoffs that begin May 21. The Eagles entered the week in sixth place in the eight-team NWOC standings. The top-four teams automatically qualify for the state playoffs. If the Eagles can maintain their ranking as one of the top-16 teams, then they’ll qualify for state with an at-large berth. Â
