HOOD RIVER — Horizon Christian School’s young boys basketball team earned its first win this season, 57-40, on Dec. 18 over visiting Valor Christian of Beaverton.
Coach Kim Linder’s Hawks (1-4) never trailed in the contest, though the visiting Knights took advantage of some hot outside shooting early in the third quarter to pull within two possessions in the nonleague tilt in Hood River.
Horizon, which started two freshmen and two sophomores flanking 6-foot-7 junior post Ben Chapman, built a double-digit lead in the second period. With Valor’s defense doubling Chapman, sophomore Milo Bielen was able to find open spaces on the floor and score six of his career-high 14 points. Chapman added seven of his 19 points in the quarter.
A couple of Knight 3-pointers and two Horizon turnovers helped Valor (1-2) pull within six points in the third quarter. Sophomore point guard Tyler Abbott found Bielen open inside for one of his seven assists and Horizon resumed control of the contest early in the final period. Abbott finished with 12 points, seven assists, three steals and five rebounds.
Chapman had nine of his team’s 38 rebounds and three blocks. His presence in the middle of the Horizon defense also led to numerous altered shots by Valor — which has just one senior on its varsity roster.
