THE DALLES — Inspired by a festive homecoming celebration, The Dalles High Riverhawks had hoped to get their first win in Special District 2 (SD2) football, but instead it was Gladstone who spoiled the fun-filled atmosphere by winning, 35-6.
The Riverhawks (0-2 SD2, 2-4 overall), guided by first-year Coach Nate Timmons, dropped their fourth straight contest with Parkrose coming to town for a 7 p.m. matchup Oct. 18.
“We’re all disappointed that we lost,” said Timmons. “We’ll just have to get back to work in practice and we’re going to treat Parkrose like just another league opponent. We’re hoping to have London Leitz back in our lineup Friday.”
Leitz, a junior punter/placekicker who was first-team all-league in 2023, has been injured. Gladstone (1-1 SD2, 2-4 overall) never trailed and led 14-0 when The Dalles scored its only touchdown. Senior running back Julian Morehouse (23 carries, 141 yards rushing) capped a Riverhawk offensive series with a 45-yard touchdown run, making it 14-6 with 4:49 remaining on the scoreboard.
Gladstone responded by scoring two touchdowns in a two-minute span to take control of the game.
Senior quarterback Leighton Voodre (9-for-20 passing, 58 yards) said the Riverhawks hurt themselves.
“I thought that we had a chance to come out and get a win against Gladstone, but just had some penalties that hurt us on a couple of key plays that could’ve given us momentum,” he said. “Our blocking was very good and there were a couple of passes that I wish I could’ve thrown a little better.
“It was a tough loss though, but now we just have to win our last two games in order to make it to the playoffs.”
The Riverhawks have won three consecutive games against Parkrose, including a 14-12 win last season (Oct. 11, 2023) at Parkrose High School in Portland. The Broncos’ only win was 34-13 on Sept. 20 at home over St. Helens (0-6).
