HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s baseball team entered Northwest Oregon Conference play last week with a roar, posting a two-game sweep over Parkrose and another victory at Rex Putnam.
The Eagles improved to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in league play and were in a four-way tie for first place heading into week No. 2. The upcoming slate includes a rematch at home against Putnam (7-5 overall, 0-1 Northwest Oregon Conference) on April 22, followed by a two-game series vs. Milwaukie (6-6, 0-2) — April 29 away and April 30 at home.
Coach Max Reitz said the April 18, 5-4, contest at Putnam was, “a gutsy win on the road. A typical NWOC game.”
HRV trailed 3-0 after the first inning, but after the Eagles settled in, they outscored the Kingsmen 5-1 the rest of the way for the come-from-behind win. Starter Addison Postlewait made it through five innings, before giving way to reliever Bodie Stuben. The Eagles trailed 4-2 at the time but scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to tie the contest. Trevor Jacobs came on to pitch the seventh after HRV had taken a one-run lead in the top of the frame.
Hood River’s hit and run production was distributed throughout its lineup with seven players contributing one hit each. Kingston McAdam’s and Tyson Harjo’s safeties were doubles. Postlewait finished with nine strikeouts over his five innings of work on the mound.
There was little need for heroics in the Parkrose series, as HRV won the April 15 opener, 10-3, and the second contest on April 18, 8-0. Postlewait went 3-for-3 and scored four runs, and McAdam and Harjo each had two RBI. Nick Tuttle went 2-for-4 and scored twice as HRV outhit the Broncos 11-3. (Tuttle also stole five bases over the two Parkrose contests.)
A four-run third inning was all the Eagles needed in the second game of the series. Maverick Hockett threw a one-hitter through six innings, striking out eight. Landen Pratt came on in relief and threw a hitless seventh inning.
Davin Snyder was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Jacobs added two hits, as did Chaz Valentine.
“Addy and Davin are playing so well for us at the top of the order,” Reitz said of No. 2 hitter Postlewait and lead-off hitter Snyder. They combined to score nine runs and had eight hits over the three HRV games last week.
The four-team logjam at the top of the NWOC standings includes top ranked Wilsonville (13-0, 3-0), No. 3 Canby (10-3, 3-0), and No. 6 La Salle Prep (10-4, 3-0). HRV is No. 12 in the OSAA ranking and Putnam is No. 11 (through April 19).
