Hood River Valley’s growing, 11-member girls wrestling team competed in the 27-school Tyrone S. Woods Tournament Dec. 2 at Oregon City High School.
Coach Jessica Lister’s Eagle squad finished 14th with 95 points and was led by the runner-up finish of Xiomara Gordian Gomez. She won her first four matches, three of them by fall, before losing to Isabella Jaime of North Medford by fall in the 155-pound first-place match.
Jaime finished fourth at 155 pounds in the 2023 6A/5A state tournament. (Interestingly, it was Gordian Gomez’s Eagle teammate a year ago, state runner-up Lauraine Smith, who sent Jaime to the consolation round in the championship event.)
Hood River’s Rubi Arriola also competed against Jaime at 155. The North Medford wrestler pinned Arriola in the second round of championship matches after the HRV grappler had won her opener, 9-7, in sudden victory over Mishal Rafique of Camas.
The Eagles also earned a third-place finish at 135 pounds from Kyra Mitchell. She won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to Gyselle Cribben of Camas by a first-period pin. Mitchell bounced back with an 8-5 decision in the match for third place to JaydaRae Nance of Redmond.
At 170 pounds, sophomore Valeria Solorio Campos placed sixth in a tough bracket. Solorio Campos won her first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals to MacKenzie Shearon of Redmond by a first-round pin. Shearon was the 6A/5A state champion at 140 pounds a season ago. Solorio Campos advanced with a consolation round bye before losing her final match by fall to Camas’ Carys Lenihan.
At 120, Phiona DeHart won one of two wrestled matches, with the victory coming against Emma Risser of Sunset by fall. At 135, Fatima Munoz wrestled two matches and earned a forfeit win in the match for 13th place.
Also at 135, Betzaida Rodriguez Nolasco won one of three wrestled matches. The victory came in her final match of the tourney, where she pinned Savanna Bingham of Glencoe High in the 11th-place match.
Charlie Bean, Melissa Jara, Evolet Olivo, and Rylee Toole also competed in the tourney for HRV. Redmond won the team title.
