Six Hood River Valley seniors played their final high school boys basketball games this past week when the Eagle season ended with home losses to state tourney team Putnam and Parkrose.
The Eagles finished the 2023-24 season with a 10-14 record, and they were 4-12 and tied for seventh in the Northwest Oregon Conference. HRV lost 76-55 to Putnam on Feb. 26 and to Parkrose, 75-41, on Feb. 27. Slow starts hurt the home team in both games.
Parkrose used an aggressive, trapping half-court defense to build a 21-5 first-quarter lead on HRV. The Eagles turned the ball over nine times in the opening period, as the offense was limited to free throws by seniors Aidan Smith and Sawyer Clemett, and a 3-pointer by junior Matthew Fauth.
Senior Grady Williams scored on a nifty pump-fake and basket to start the second quarter, but Parkrose (9-15 overall, 6-10 NWOC) scored the next 16 points to build a 37-7 lead. Parkrose senior Ka’Mar Benbo was a catalyst with three baskets on slashing drives and also in leading the ball-hawking Bronco defense.
HRV Coach Christopher Dirks spread around the playing time, seeking a workable combination against Parkrose.
The Broncos were in the thick of the NWOC playoff berth chase until a five-game losing streak from Feb. 6 to the 23rd derailed those plans.
The closest Hood River got the rest of the game was 58-31 after senior Ben Bauman made a 3-pointer from the left wing.
Clemett led HRV in scoring with 11 points.
Against Putnam (21-4 overall), which won its seventh game in a row against HRV, the Eagles again started slowly, trailing 25-12 after one period. The Kingsmen, who qualified for the Class 5A state tourney after a playoff game win last week over South Albany, led by as many as 21 points in the first half.
A 6-0 run early in the second half cut the lead to 14 points, and it was 55-41 later in the period before Putnam ended the quarter with a 6-0 scoring run. An 8-0 Kingsman scoring burst gave Putnam its biggest lead at 68-42 before Clemett’s dunk on a back cut gave the home crowd something to celebrate in the final period.
Clemett led the way in scoring with 16 points and Bauman added nine.
Also playing their final basketball games last week for HRV were seniors Sixto Garcia and Ethan Rivera. The six seniors (also Clemett, Smith, Williams, and Bauman) were honored before the Putnam contest along with family members.
NWOC notes: Wilsonville won the league title with a 16-0 record; Putnam was second at 14-2. Those two teams qualified for the eight-team 5A state tourney March 6-9 at Linfield University.
