THE GORGE — The Dufur High Rangers continued to display the qualities of a top contender in Class 1A eight-man football as they won their third straight nonleague game, 80-36, over winless Chiloquin on Sept. 21 at Dufur High School. Two other local 1A squads — Sherman and Lyle/Wishram — lost Sept. 20 games. The Huskies (1-3) lost 60-36 to the DeSales Catholic High Irish (3-0) in Walla, Walla, Washington. The Cougars (1-3) lost 44-36 in four overtimes at home to the Waitsburg High Cardinals (2-1) from Walla, Walla.
Dufur built a 36-8 first quarter lead. Chase Richards (six carries, 69-yards rushing), Nolan Cates (seven carries, 268 yards rushing, four TDs), Gavin Anderson and Scott Graham (four carries, 69-yards rushing) each scored on touchdown runs to help spearhead the Ranger offense. Anderson (4-for-6 passing, 56-yards) threw a 35-yard pass to Cates at the outset of the game to put the Rangers up 6-0.
The Rangers outscored the Panthers 38-16 in the second quarter to build a 74-16 halftime margin. Richards, Cates, Chase Peterson and Hank Wilson (10 carries, 54-yards rushing, two TDs) each scored on touchdown runs for Dufur in the period.
Coach Jack Henderson said: “We came out and played well for the most part. We had a couple of breakdowns on our kickoff team, which is something that we need to improve on.”
Lyle loses thriller
The Cougars, guided by Coach Dave Devoe, were seeking a second straight home win. “It was a great game, played really well … and we always hope to win every game, there’s no doubt that,” said Devoe. “However, when my boys play that hard, then it’s okay to get a loss. Both teams just really played hard and with a lot of heartfelt desire and we just came up a little short.”
The Cougars built a 14-0 first quarter advantage. The Cardinals responded by scoring two second quarter touchdowns, knotting it 14-14 at halftime. The Cardinals scored the next four touchdowns before Lyle fought back to tie the game at 36 at the end of regulation.
Neither team scored on three possessions apiece from the 25-yard line. In the fourth overtime, the Cardinals converted a scoring drive and a two-point conversion, and then stopped the Cougars from scoring.
The Cougars were led offensively by junior tailback Carson Ramsay, who had 49 carries for 307 yards rushing and three touchdowns. It marked the second straight game that Ramsay had over 300 yards rushing. Junior Jack Thiemann (five catches, 135-yards, TD) led the Cougars in receiving. Sophomore quarterback Mason Ramsay was 10-for-23 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougar defense was led by sophomore defensive lineman Hunter Oatman, who had three sacks.
Redsides beat Falcons
South Wasco County (1-0 SD1, 2-2 overall) opened its four-game six-man football Special District 1 schedule Sept. 20 with a 40-6 home win over Spray. The Redsides were coming off a 45-6 loss Sept. 13 to Harper Charter. “We challenged the kids in practice to play more as team and we did some things to kind of help them respond better because they just were not taking the responsibility for their recent mistakes and they pointed their fingers at each other,” said Coach Mike Waine. “We just decided that we wanted to come out and play as a team, whether we win or lose. We don’t have one superstar on our team, but we do have five great football players. We really have not played together very well as a team though until Friday’s game against Spray.”
The Redsides were led offensively by senior quarterback Storm McCoy (9-for-12 passing, 114 yards, TD) and senior running back Gavin Hagen (two carries, 84-yards rushing, two catches, 25 yards receiving).
The Redside defense forced 11 turnovers, including six in the first quarter to set the tone early. Senior Nick Packard and junior George Barnett each had four tackles. Senior nose guard Marcos Chavez had two tackles, a sack and an interception which he returned for a touchdown.
