WHITE SALMON — An aggressive Castle Rock defense held the edge and stymied Columbia High’s offense as the host Rockets posted a 34-6, Trico League football win Oct. 11.
Castle Rock (4-2 overall, 2-2 Trico) scored 27 points in the second quarter to take control of the game. Defensively, the Rockets wouldn’t allow the Bruins (1-5, 0-4) any room to the outside and their active linebackers limited the amount of time Columbia’s quarterbacks had to set up in the pocket to throw passes.
Castle Rock limited Columbia to 76 yards of total offense and five first downs in the decisive first half.
Columbia’s lone score came in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard run by Wongani Schlegel.
The Bruins’ best drive came on its opening possession, when the team moved 61 yards from its 30 to the Castle Rock 9-yard line. A third down incomplete pass led to CHS lining up for a 26-yard field goal attempt. The play ended with the Bruin holder scrambling toward the sideline before throwing an incomplete pass, which led to an intentional grounding penalty.
The teams traded possessions before Castle Rock took over on downs at the Bruin 45. Two plays moved the ball to the 30 when quarterback Trevor Rogen scored on the next play for a 6-0 Rocket lead. Castle Rock scored three more times in the period on short drives of three plays, one play, and four plays.
