WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins turned their season around by winning three straight games last week to conclude their Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Class 1A boys basketball Trico League schedule and qualify for a first-round district playoff game. The Bruins were scheduled to play at home Feb. 10 vs. the Hoquiam High Grizzlies (2-6 Evergreen League, 6-14 overall). The winner qualifies for a berth in the eight-team District 4 tournament beginning Feb. 13.
The Bruins (6-8 Trico, 12-8 overall) began the week with a 74-62 home win Feb. 5 on senior night over the Castle Rock High Rockets (6-8 Trico, 11-11 overall). In a pregame ceremony, seniors Seth White, Jaden Wang, Bryce Wang, Anthony Salcedo and Ulices Huerta were honored for their contributions to the Bruins basketball program.
The Bruins jumped out to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter of the game that had six ties and seven lead changes. The first quarter concluded with a three-point play by junior Mason Hamilton.
The Rockets tied the game at halftime, eventually taking a 38-37 lead in the third period. The Bruins outscored the Rockets 17-11 over the remainder of the quarter. Midway through the fourth, Hamilton scored on a layup in the lane, was fouled and he sank a free throw giving the Bruins a 68-53 lead.
Two days later in a Gorge rivalry road contest versus the Stevenson High Bulldogs (1-13 Trico, 2-19 overall), the Bruins won 82-46 at Stevenson High School. The victory helped the Bruins get in a three-way tie for fourth place in the eight-team standings with Castle Rock and the King’s Way Christian High Knights (6-8 Trico, 13-8 overall). Columbia won a league tiebreaker game, 60-57, over Castle Rock on Feb. 8 at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver to qualify for the district tourney.
