This year marks the first summer league baseball schedule in six years for the Columbia River Bandits (0-3) of Columbia High School.
The 13-member squad is guided by Bruins’ head baseball coach William Gross and assistant coach Trenton Howard.
“It’s been quite a long time since White Salmon has had a summer league team,” said Gross, a 2018 Columbia High graduate. “When I became the new coach this year, one of my goals was to get summer ball back, because it’s such an important way to help players develop.
The Bandits started their short summer season July 2, and they lost a doubleheader in Yakima, Wash. They’ll conclude a 16-game schedule with their season finale July 27 in Vancouver.
“We had a very competitive game with the Hustlers,” said Gross of the Bandits’ July 5, 17-10, road loss in The Dalles. “It was actually a pretty good matchup because both of our teams are primarily young players with lots of freshmen and sophomores.”
Players from Columbia High who are on the new summer league team include Ben Borton, Bryce Wang, Wyatt Stelma, Deegan Bearden, Dylan Landgren, Falkner Grabb, Jaden Wang, Kai Brasuell, Kellen Olson, Landyne Patnode, Trenton Boydston and William Mann.
The Bandits were seeking to get their first win when they played Tuesday at Castle Rock. Their next contest is Thursday at home at 4 p.m. versus Castle Rock, followed by a 6 p.m. game Friday in Vancouver.
