THE GORGE — The No. 5-ranked defending Big Sky League champion Dufur High Rangers (3-0 league, 8-3 overall) captured a fourth straight victory in OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) Class 1A boys basketball, 51-24, Jan. 8 over the C.S. Lewis Academy Watchmen (2-5) in Newberg.
The Rangers jumped out to a double-digit first quarter lead at 15-4 and they maintained their momentum for the remainder of the contest. The Rangers led 31-8 at halftime and 41-19 after three quarters.
Senior Jacob Brown led Dufur in scoring with nine points, followed by Nolan and Bryson Cates with eight apiece. Dufur remained unbeaten in the Big Sky following a 53-50 win on Jan. 7 over the Klickitat/Glenwood High Vandals at Klickitat High School. Dufur was seeking to extend its win streak in Tuesday’s road game against the Horizon Christian High Hawks (2-2 league, 3-6 overall) in Hood River.
The Hawks split two league games last week as they won 57-44 Jan. 7 on the road over the Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (0-4 league, 3-8 overall) behind Ben Chapman’s 28 points. The Hawks followed with a 53-37 loss to the Sherman High Huskies (3-0 league, 7-4 overall) in Moro.
The Huskies extended their win streak to four straight, after a 56-43 road victory Jan. 11 over Lyle.
The South Wasco County High Redsides notched a fourth straight win 55-46 at home Jan. 11 over Condon. The Redsides also won 72-31 Jan. 8 over Trout Lake and 77-43 Jan. 10 over Mitchell/Spray. Junior Jason Hull scored 34, 36 and 35 points in the three games to push his career total past 1,000.
