THE GORGE — The defending Big Sky League champion and No. 2-ranked Dufur High Rangers appear to be the top area team again early this season as their 4-0 record suggests.
The Rangers remained undefeated following a 47-41 Dec. 17 home win over Heppner (3-3) of the Class 2A Blue Mountain Conference. The Rangers, guided by longtime Coach Hollie Darden, overcame a 13-11 first quarter deficit to take a 24-19 halftime advantage.
“We’ve won a lot of close games and to be honest, we could just as easily have an 0-4 record,” said Darden. All of Dufur’s wins have been by single-digit margins.
The Rangers were led in scoring by senior Nolan Cates’ career-high 16 points.
South Wasco County (4-1) scored a season high point total in a 72-66 road win Dec. 17 over the Class 2A Irrigon High Knights (2-5). Junior Jason Hull scored a season-high 40 points for the Redsides.
Klickitat/Glenwood High (3-2) won their latest game 60-40 Dec. 17 at Damascus Christian.
The Trout Lake High Mustangs (5-1) and the South Wasco County High Redsides (4-1) continue to pace area 1A girls teams. The Redsides notched a Dec. 17 non-league road win, 53-32, over Class 2A Irrigon. The Redsides’ only setback was a 49-46 home loss to Southwest Christian (4-2) Dec. 14 in Maupin.
Trout Lake (5-1) is scheduled to play just one game (Dec. 21) in 19 days and its next contest is Jan. 3 versus the Horizon Christian High Hawks (0-4).
The Sherman High Huskies (2-4) lost a third straight nonleague game, 49-38, to the Joseph High Eagles (3-4) Dec. 19 at Sherman High in Moro.
