Wy’east won the Region 4 East Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Tournament, which was held at The Dalles Middle School on Saturday, March 14. The team consists of Kendra Wilkins, Aunika Yasui, Jimena Gonzaga, Nick Arenas, Ethan Happy, and coach David Sacquety, Wy’east reading teacher. Wy’east has won its regional OBOB tournament four times in the past six years.
Wy’east competed in the 6-8 grade division. During OBOB matches, students answer two types of questions about sixteen books read by teams of four to five students. “In Which Book” questions ask students to identify titles and authors of books, whereas “Content” questions provide students with the title of a book but they have to provide specific details from that book in order to answer the questions correctly.
At the regional tournament, teams are first placed into round robin pools. Each team plays twice and is seeded for playoff brackets based on the amount of points earned in the first two matches by answering questions correctly. Once the playoffs begin, teams advance based on head-to-head results. Thirty-two questions, 16 for each team, are asked for all matches except for the final battle, in which a total of 64 questions, 32 for each team, determine the winner.
Wy’east opened up tournament play against the hosts, The Dalles Middle School. The match was close for the first half of the battle, but Wy’east eventually pulled away to win by a score of 48-25. Wy’east’s second match of the day was against St. Mary’s Academy, a private school located in The Dalles. Wy’east won that contest by a score of 55-25.
After the first two matches, all schools waited for points to be calculated. When the brackets were posted, Wy’east had earned the top seed and a first round bye. After St. Mary’s Academy won a tiebreaker, Wy’east faced the private school again in a rematch. This time, the score was a little closer, but Wy’east won again by a score of 45-30 in the semifinal match.
During the regional final, Wy’east encountered a strong team from Dufur Mid-Level School, but emerged from the contest victorious by a score of 102-46.
Wy’east advances to the state OBOB tournament next, to be held at Chemeketa Community College in Salem on April 11.
