Orders were placed this week with the Emry Lumber & Fuel Co. for approximately one million feet of lumber to be used in connection with the building of the Hood River-White Salmon, or Waucoma Bridge. Large quantities of piling are now being delivered, and work will be in full swing as soon as necessary material has arrived. — Hood River News
A letter from the County Superintendent of Schools under the date of Sept. 14 informs us a change in plans will permit of the Teachers Institute being held in White Salmon this year. The woman’s Club has had a committee canvas the town and secure the promise of rooms from private individuals for the entertainment of visiting teachers who cannot find accommodation at the hotels. — White Salmon Enterprise

The AGA cannery is now operating on Bartlett pears with about 450 workers, or, as Bob Ridgley put it, with a crew and a-half. Many more women are needed to fill out the night crew, and he is asking those willing to work to get in touch with Earl Ziegler. With a heavy tonnage of apples to be canned when Bartlett pears are through, work at the cannery will be available probably well into December. — Hood River News
Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Krall and Roy Janes had breakfast in the huckleberry fields Sunday. They picked seven hours and got 18 gallons. The camps were most all empty and there was no traffic on the road. — White Salmon Enterprise
Wasco county today marked up its sales of war bonds in the third war loan drive to an estimated $330,000. In this amount were included two allocations of $64,000 from a $6,585,600 purchase by the state of Oregon, and $23,000 from a $500,000 purchase by the Pacific Power & Light company — The two allocations totaling $87,000 alone, in addition to the thousands of small purchases of war bonds made by individual citizens. — The Dalles Chronicle

Chamber of Commerce directors took a stand Monday against the Oregon Legislature’s 1963 tax measure. In a resolution favoring a “No” vote in the Oct. 15 special tax election, the chamber also urged “that the Legislature be asked to enact new broad based tax legislation which will recognize the taxpayers ability to pay and the principle that all citizens should participate in support of costs of government.” — Hood River News
Enrollment in the White Salmon Valley Schools has now reached a total of 1,089 pupils. Husum 70, White Salmon Elementary 493, Junior High 192, Columbia High 334. This is an increase of 24 pupils in high school and 16 pupils at the Junior High since Oct. 1, 1962. — White Salmon Enterprise
The present protective dike that closes the Columbia River between the Oregon shore and the south end of the spillway at John Day Dam is only a fraction of its ultimate size, Resident Engineer C. B. Olmstead said Thursday. Further widening and raising work will be done on the rock barrier behind which the big powerhouse will be constructed. The present fill provides just “a working platform,” Olmstead said. — The Dalles Chronicle

A crackdown on students drinking and smoking around Hood River Valley High School property during home football games is planned beginning Friday night, according to HRV Principal Harvey Hazen. The action is in response to two consecutive weeks of problems during football games. Hazen said that trespassing arrests might be made in the future in an effort to curtail the growing problem. — Hood River News
The gauntlet has been thrown down and the battle lines have been drawn in the fight for a stock-restricted area in western Klickitat County, where private landowners and timber companies feel cattle grazing isn’t compatible with tree growing and individual property rights. The group pushing for a stock restricted area on the west end is called the Western Klickitat Reforestation Organization. — White Salmon Enterprise
Wasco County court members this morning decided to enter a suit already filed in an effort to settle what it considers violations of land use rules by the City of Rajneeshpuram. Wilford Carey, attorney for the court, said that following about two hours of closed session discussion, the court decided to enter the 1000 Friends of Oregon suit for an injunction aimed at stopping development on the Muddy Ranch. — The Dalles Chronicle

For the third time, the City of Hood River has postponed the first public comment period on a draft plan for mixed-use zoning of the waterfront. The formal Planning Commission hearing that was set to take place Sept. 24 has been rescheduled in October. City officials decided to postpone the forum because the third county hearing on Wal-Mart’s application for a supercenter was scheduled to take place that same evening. — Hood River News
In a unanimous decision last week, the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners altered the environmental appeal process within the county. “We extended the length of when appeals can be filed to 21 from 10 days of the issuance of the EIS,” said County Commissioner Don Struck. The move was agreed upon due to concerns about inadequate public notification. — White Salmon Enterprise
A conflict between commercial gillnetters and sports fisherman Sept. 10 resulted in law-breaking on both sides, according to a sergeant with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fisheries. ... Fish sanctuaries are established around the mouths of all tributary rivers to the mainstream Columbia River, as well as around dams, said Sgt. Mitch Hicks of Inter-Tribal Fisheries. — The Dalles Chronicle
