At Cascade Locks School on Wednesday, elementary students laughed and moved in equal amounts, with help from Phoenix Theater of Hood River Valley High School. The 17-member drama/comedy/dance troupe performed skits and numbers from its lively mix of visual comedy and choreographed movement for the Cascade Locks kids, but only after a half-hour session of group activities that got the kids’ bodies and imaginations moving. In “Yes We Are!” circle participants call out an animal or an activity — ala “We Are Elephants!” — and demonstrate its movement, and then everyone calls out “Yes We Are!” imitates it for 15-30 seconds until the next example is called out. At top, Marley Meyers and Emma Samson join in an accelerated group percussion exercise. Above, the youngsters laugh as they watch Phoenix members perform a pyramid. Rachel Harry directs the HRVHS troupe.
