Officers take ‘Cold Water Challenge’ to honor fallen colleagues

BUCKET LIST with a new meaning: Zach Bohince, left, Gavin McIlvenna and Kris Barber stand by as Andrew Vanderwerf pours a bucket of ice water over his head in the parking lot of Hood River Supply, which provided the buckets and water. On the warm Friday morning, working mostly in the shade, the four law enforcement officers stood and delivered, calling the names of the fallen as each new five-gallon dose cascaded. Below are McIlvenna, Bohince, Barber and Vanderwerf. All are Hood River residents; Barber works for Portland Police Bureau and the others are Oregon State troopers.

They were the coolest guys in town. Literally and figuratively. Four Hood River law enforcement officers dumped water on their own heads Friday in the parking lot of Hood River Supply. 41 buckets of ice water.

The event was the Cold Water Challenge, a benefit for the Officer Down Memorial in Washington, D.C., which honors men, women, and canine officers who have died while serving their communities. In Cold Water Challenge, officers douse themselves while calling out the name of the fallen officer. They pay $10 per bucket to do so.
