For a second time in the last few months, The Dalles City Council expressed its displeasure with the new “adult store” in town, this time in a resolution narrowly passed Monday.
Resolution 04-010, “A resolution expressing concern over operation of adult businesses within the city,” passed 3-2 over objections of the mayor and the two women on the council.
Councilors Chris Zukin, Tim Broehl and Michael Tenney voted in favor of the measure, while Mary Ann Davis, Dorothy Davis and Mayor Robb Van Cleave opposed it on grounds that the council has made a policy in the past of not “legislating morality.” (The mayor did not vote.)
“I’m certainly not in favor of having an adult bookstore in town,” Davis said, but added she did not think the resolution was appropriate. The council sent out a press release last fall stating its position on the matter when word of the store first circulated.
The council chose not to become involved because we felt it was a personal issue,” Davis said. “We felt we could not legislate our morality on someone else. As long as I have been on the council — 12 years — we have never violated that rule.” — The Dalles Daily Chronicle, May 26, 2004
