Father of the Bride by Caroline Francke is based on the novel by Edward Streeter. This classic, heart-felt comedy comes to the Columbia Center for the Arts this February. Directed by Bob Fox. The story of a normal American family set in the 1950s deals with a father coping with the realization that his only daughter is no longer just a little girl but a grown woman who is about to get married.
When a boy meets a girl and falls in love, how does an average American family deal with the issues of keeping a wedding small while it begins to overwhelm everybody? Stanley Banks has worked his whole frugal life to make sure his family is well tended for. Finding out that his only daughter has decided to get married throws his universe into chaos.
Kay Banks is a fun spirited young lady who, despite her father’s feelings, has shocked him by announcing her engagement to a man no one really knows. Throw in two brothers, a caring mother, and a slap-stick funny maid and the whole situation becomes overwhelmingly funny that everyone can relate too.
Once the family realizes they’re in trouble, the laughs continue when a wedding planner is hired to help out.
This play has been adapted by two movies over the years. The 1953 version with Elizabeth Taylor, and the 1990s version with Steve Martin and Martin Short.
