Three Hood River Valley soccer standouts staked their claim to one of the most prestigious youth soccer honors on May 10 at the Tualatin Recreation Center.
Junior Lisa Tedford and senior Becca Meierbachtol helped their team, the Portland Purple, win the 18-and-under girls Snickers Cup, while senior Matt Dallman helped his team, the Westside Metro Rangers, win the 18-and-under boys Snickers Cup.
“This isn’t something that happens every year,” said Dallman, a first-team all-conference midfielder who will play for Chico State University in the fall.
“We had to beat our long-time rivals from Corvallis in the finals, and we just got the better of them this time,” he said.
Dallman’s Rangers beat Corvallis by a score of 1-0, while Tedford and Meierbachtol’s team took down the Lake Oswego Storm by a score of 2-1.
Both teams had to battle their way through five rounds of competition to reach the finals of the winner-take-all event.
By winning the Snickers Cup, both the Purple and the Rangers will travel to the regional tournament June 21-28 in Oahu, Hawaii, along with the champions of 12 other Western states.
All the top teams from the four regional tournaments will compete for the national title in Germantown, Md., later this summer.
Meierbachtol, who did not play in the Snickers Cup due to injury, said she will continue to attend team functions, and hopes to be healthy in time for her freshman season at the University of Portland.
Tedford will return to HRV in the fall, where she will be one of the key varsity team members.
