The Horizons Project is well under way with discussion circles meeting to gather information on poverty in our community. Goals are to identify poverty in our community, commit collectively to do something about it and begin to take strategic action to change it. Your thoughts and input are important for this project to succeed; call Doug Anderson 395-9307 or Ray Thygesen 395-2318 to participate. Contact Ava Van Velsor at the WSU/Klickitat County Extension office, 773-5817, or go on line to www.horizons.wsu.edu for additional information.
The Trout Lake Volunteer Fire Department is seeking a volunteer to finish out the term of Commissioner Ray Holtman, who recently resigned due to health issues. Anyone interested in filling this position may call Fire Chief Steve Koenig at 395-2684. Fire Department meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Fire Hall.
4-H has more than 20 enthusiastic youngsters in its new group. It meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall and has many different projects underway. If you have an interest in, say horses, cooking, hogs, sewing, etc. and are willing to share your talents with a small group of these children, please call Page Logan at 395-3686 or Coralee Warner at 395-2561.
Quilters: Trout Lake Quilters meet every Monday at 9:30 a.m. and always welcome new members. I'm told you don't have to know how to quilt, just be willing to cut fabric, tie knots, or assist in any number of ways. In addition to creating the beautiful quilts that are sold at Saturday Market, they are currently stitching up "Touchy Feely" fabric books that will be sent to blind orphans in Romania. They have also collected a number of sewing machines that are being sent as well. These will all be put to use for the benefit of these Romanian orphans.
Grange -- The Trout Lake Grange meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. New members are welcome and needed. The Grange Hall is a valuable asset to our community, used by all of us for birthdays, weddings, and other events. The building recently took a nasty hit from Mother Nature when a large tree fell on it during the Dec. 14 windstorm. Temporary repairs were made soon after, but permanent repairs will wait till warmer weather.
Information about becoming a Grange member, or to rent the Hall, please call Betty Schmid at 395-2679.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my friends at McCoy Holliston, my amazing friends and neighbors in Trout Lake, White Salmon and Glenwood and my wonderful family for giving me a surprise Retirement Party and a 70th Birthday Party. I am humbled and most grateful for all the kind words and gifts. Working for 25 years with the fantastic crew at McCoy Holliston was a joy and not really work, however I am very happy to not hear an alarm every morning! Turning 70 was an easy milestone due to the efforts of my three wonderful children and my five awesome grandchildren. Thank you all, again.
Having agreed to write the news column once per month, I'm still getting my journalism legs under me, so this column is a little wobbly, next month should be better. Please do contact me with any news items: Maxine@gorge.net or 395-2101 Maxine Bulick, newswriter.
