Veterans Day comes on Nov. 11. Formerly known as Armistice Day, the federal holiday marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I back in 1918.
It has come to symbolize much more than that over the years. On Nov. 11, we as a nation honor all veterans of the armed forces of the United States.
There are dozens of people in our community who have served in our military, and there are many serving in dangerous duty currently in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Our nation owes its very existence, and its continued survival, to the sacrifices and courage of the men and women of our military over the decades.
We hope and pray for peace, yet we live in a dangerous world and must maintain a top-notch military to protect our nation. Those who sign on to serve deserve our gratitude, respect, and support.
On Veterans Day, take some time to reflect on the sacrifices of those who are serving or have served our nation in the military. With the conflicts far away, we as a society often don't focus enough on the men and women who are literally in harm's way -- and on the sacrifices and stress felt by their family members.
The reality is, we owe our veterans a tremendous debt. Especially at this time of year, we need to take the time to let our veterans know we are proud of them, and we are deeply grateful to all who have served honorably.
