The Bingen-White Salmon Police Department is warning of a rash of break-ins of cars in the White Salmon area.
According to BWSPD Sgt. Jim Andring, on Friday, Dec. 3, the Police Department responded to 10 "car prowls." Most of them occurred in an area bordered by Main Avenue on the west, Park Avenue on the east, Spring Street on the north, and Lincoln Street on the south.
Andring pointed out that in one case, a perpetrator or perpetrators broke out a window to gain entry. The other cars were entered through unlocked doors.
Valuables worth approximately $3,000 were stolen from the 10 vehicles.
According to Andring, the thieves tried door handles as they walked down the streets, moving on if the doors were locked.
"If the suspects see anything especially valuable inside, they may break a window, but that is fairly rare," Andring explained. "It is not uncommon to see a rash of car prowls right before Christmas, and we want to warn area residents that this may happen again."
Andring added that other Gorge communities have been victimized by thefts from vehicles, and he advised residents to remove valuables and keep cars locked.
Reporting crimes is critical to the Police Department, Andring added, noting that some people don't report thefts because they believe the crimes are unlikely to be solved.
"All such incidents are important to the Police Department," Andring said. "Besides needing to know what goes on within the community and where it is occurring, a single case can lead to the identification of the suspects."
